In the toxic beauty campaign CCEJ will utilize our community outreach expertise to educate consumers about the human health impacts of toxic chemicals in nail salon beauty products. The specific target group will be women of color because we are the largest nail salon patrons in the target areas. Outreach will be composed of the following components:
1. Identify and locate alternative products. Meet with distributors of non-toxic nail polish to obtain samples to provide to business owners.
2. Outreach to women of color who visit nail salons. Direct outreach will be conducted by the outreach worker to women, with permission of the business owner, while they are at the shop ? as they are getting their nails done. We will also distribute information to women at beauty product ores in the neighborhood.
3. Follow-up on impacts of outreach to salons AND effectiveness of education efforts.
4. Door-to-door outreach. Conduct outreach directly to residents in the target neighborhoods with outreach support from area youth. The outreach program will focus on human health aspects of beauty products and household products and will provide information about alternatives. Postcards to manufacturers (postage included) requesting information about phthalates will be given to residents for them to fill out and mail.
5. Tabling and outreach at community events. The outreach worker will attend community events for the purpose of consumer education about phthalates and other toxic chemicals in beauty products. A display board along with example phthalate-free products will be set up. Manufacturer postcards, as described above, will be distributed at these tables.
