Clean & Safe Ports Act Introduced
30 July 2010
After much hard work and organizing by countless dedicated people and organizations, clean ports legislation is here: HR 5967, the Clean and Safe Ports Act. Its introduction marks real progress in our efforts to clean up the broken port trucking industry, and put an end to sweatshop on wheels working conditions for drivers and toxic air for Port communities. CCEJ strongly supports this effort along with over 100 other groups. We urge all our supporters to sign the support letter.
Also please contact your Member of Congress, since no Washington representative has seen fit to co-sponsor it.

South Park Bridge Developments
29 June 2010
"Wake" for South Park Bridge
The Seattle Times is paying attention, first with some sketches and then a column on how the imminent bridge closure will affect South Park residents. Meanwhile the West Seattle Blog keeps updating the amount available for its replacement. We note with some pride that County Executive Dow Constantine and City Councilor Jan Drago "commended the residents of South Park for their tireless
work over the past several weeks in support of bridge funding." Also, the White Center Now blog reminds: "Shutdown Night is Almost Here".

South Park Wins State Funds
A Seattle Times Report quotes Governor Gregoire as pledging $20 million in state funds to replace the bridge. Meanwhile the Transportation Choices Coalition reports that "In just one week, the 79-year old South Park drawbridge will be permanently locked to an open position -- that is, until the money can be found to tear it down and replace it with a new bridge. Today, County Executive Dow Constantine, County Councilmembers Bob Ferguson and Julia Patterson, Gov. Chris Gregoire, Seattle City Council President Richard Conlin and Port Commissioner Gayle Tarleton announced their commitment for $70 million towards the South Park Bridge. This level of commitment from the state ($20m), county ($30m), city ($15m) and Port of Seattle ($5m) puts the project in very strong contention for a TIGER II grant from the federal government. If the project can win this grant, construction can begin as early as next year."
Meanwhile, read the West Seattle Blog's report.

Community Meeting Tuesday, June 1 @ 7pm.
@ South Park Neighborhood Center
8201 10th Ave S
Speakers at the community meeting last Wednesday made it clear that considerable efforts are being made to find funding to replace the old bridge, but little to nothing is being done to organize and prepare the Latino community of South Park and the neighborhood in general. We are organizing a second meeting to begin taking action to inform and organize the community. Our immediate goals are

Duwamish Cleanup--Public Meeting
18 June 2010
The Terminal 117 EPA Public Meeting went very well, with clear presentations of two alternatives for cleanup; one removing some of the material and capping the rest, and a slightly more expensive one removing almost all of the contamination.
All of the people who testified supported the "cleaner" alternative, including several South Park people, CCEJ Board Chair Christina Gallegos, and a taxpayer from North Seattle.
If you didn't testify, you can still comment by visiting the project website. This site also provides a great deal of information about the project, and is translated into Spanish, Vietnamese and Cambodian. Looks like EPA is doing a much better job of community outreach than in the past.

Central Co-Op Renews Support for CCEJ
28 January 2010
Our good friends at the Central Co-Op have renewed their support for CCEJ, as they have often done in the past. The Co-op seeks to become even more rooted in the community and responsive to its needs, and CCEJ very much appreciates the financial and informational support that it provides. Watch for the Co-Op's new logo to appear in our web pages when it is selected and for signs at our events crediting the Co-op with supplying the food.

Neighbors Say the Port of Seattle is Making Them Sick
10/08/2009
Our ally Puget Sound Sage has surveyed the people of Georgetown and South Park about how they are affected by truck traffic and other operations of the Port of Seattle. The results are clear: they say the Port is sickening them. CCEJ assisted in conducting the survey last month; we are glad to help publicize the results. KING-5 and KOMO News both covered the story. Stay tuned!
